EU NEWS 

EU Health Ministers meeting
Belgium’s EU Council Presidency convened a meeting of EU health ministers, with non-communicable diseases (NCDs) prevention topping the agenda. EU policymakers were urged to implement recommendations from a White Paper which was authored by anti-THR organisation SmokeFree Partnership and had contributions from Bloomberg funded University of Bath Tobacco Control Research Group.

The EU Parliament must listen to consumers
The next European Parliament should make sure that consumers’ demands are met, as its soon-to-be-elected members carry out the revision of the EU tobacco policy framework, according to Italian MEP Pietro Fiocchi.

COUNTRY UPDATES    

France
Following the Merci la Vape petition signed by almost 100,000 people and a survey involving almost 40,000 respondents, the associations AIDUCE, Sovape, la Vape du Coeur and Fivape have published a hundred-page white paper. With crucial political deadlines looming in France and at EU level on the subject, the book takes a fluid look at scientific knowledge and the opinions of vapers in France, and sets out a series of recommendations for a general-interest policy on vaping. A fund has been set up to finance a printed version for key players.

Ireland
Social Democrats TD Jennifer Whitmore has called for the urgent regulation of nicotine pouches and for an analysis of the extent of their use by young people.

Professor Jan Nowak from the Medical University of Warsaw emphasises that the lack of an appropriate approach to harm reduction may limit Poland's chances of reducing the health burden associated with smoking

Romania
ETHRA partner ACPAN wrote an open letter to the Health Ministry and the WHO urging them to adopt harm reduction strategies in order to accelerate smoking cessation in Romania.

UK
(i) Tobacco and Vapes Bill
The UK’s controversial Tobacco and Vapes Bill has been put on hold, for now at least, following the announcement of a snap election in July.
